The basic formula
Attendance percentage is simply classes attended ÷ classes held × 100. Count classes, not days, if your school records attendance period by period. For employees, use days present and total working days.
Reaching the required percentage
Most Indian universities and many boards expect at least 75% attendance before a student can sit the exam. If you are below it, each class you attend raises both the attended count and the total. Solving (attended + x) ÷ (total + x) ≥ 0.75 gives x = (0.75 × total − attended) ÷ 0.25, rounded up to the next whole class.
How many classes you can miss
If you are above the target, missing a class only adds to the total. Solving attended ÷ (total + y) ≥ 0.75 gives y = attended ÷ 0.75 − total, rounded down. It is a buffer for illness or emergencies, not a plan: rules differ, and some institutions calculate attendance subject by subject.
| Attended / held | Attendance | What it means at 75% |
|---|---|---|
| 45 / 60 | 75.00% | Exactly at the limit, no class to spare |
| 40 / 60 | 66.67% | Attend the next 20 classes |
| 54 / 60 | 90.00% | You could miss up to 12 classes |
| 30 / 50 | 60.00% | Attend the next 30 classes |
For teachers and schools
Tracking this by hand across sections and subjects is slow and error-prone. A school system that marks attendance class-wise and shows each student's running percentage lets teachers warn students early, and lets parents see absences the same day.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate attendance percentage?
Attendance % = classes attended ÷ total classes held × 100. Attending 45 of 60 classes gives 75%.
How many classes do I need to attend to reach 75%?
Classes needed = (0.75 × total − attended) ÷ 0.25, rounded up, assuming you attend every upcoming class. With 40 of 60 attended you need 20 more classes in a row.
How many classes can I miss and stay at 75%?
Classes you can miss = attended ÷ 0.75 − total, rounded down. With 54 of 60 attended you can miss 12 classes.
Does the calculator work for other targets?
Yes. Change the required percentage to 60%, 80%, 85% or any figure your school, university or employer uses.
Can employees use it?
Yes. Enter days present and working days to get monthly or yearly attendance percentage.
