Most schools, colleges and universities in India require 75% attendance to sit for exams. That means attending at least 3 out of every 4 classes or working days. Here is how to work out how many you can miss and how many you need to attend to recover.
Shortcut: the attendance percentage calculator does the maths for you.
Quick table: 75% of common totals
| Total classes or days | Must attend | Can miss |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | 30 | 10 |
| 48 | 36 | 12 |
| 60 | 45 | 15 |
| 90 | 68 | 22 |
| 100 | 75 | 25 |
| 120 | 90 | 30 |
| 180 | 135 | 45 |
| 200 | 150 | 50 |
| 220 | 165 | 55 |
When 75% is not a whole number (for 90, it is 67.5), round up what you must attend.

Can miss = total − ceiling(0.75 × total)
Example: 90 classes in the semester. 0.75 × 90 = 67.5 → must attend 68. Can miss 90 − 68 = 22.
Formula 2: how many in a row to get back to 75%?
If you are below 75% now:
Classes needed = ceiling((0.75 × held − attended) ÷ 0.25)
which simplifies to 4 × (0.75 × held − attended), rounded up.
Example: 48 classes held, you attended 30 (62.5%).
- 0.75 × 48 = 36
- 36 − 30 = 6
- 6 ÷ 0.25 = 24 more classes, attending all of them
Check: (30 + 24) ÷ (48 + 24) = 54 ÷ 72 = 75%.
Formula 3: how many can I skip from here?
If you are above 75%:
Can skip now = floor(attended ÷ 0.75 − held)
Example: 50 held, 45 attended (90%). 45 ÷ 0.75 = 60, minus 50 = 10 more classes you could miss and still be at 75%.
Things that catch students out
- Attendance is usually counted per subject, not overall. You can be at 82% overall and below 75% in one subject.
- Medical leave is often condoned only with a certificate submitted on time.
- Lab and tutorial sessions may be counted separately from lectures.

For schools and colleges
Tracking attendance per student per subject on paper is where errors creep in. MizUp's LMS records attendance by class and subject and shows students below 75% before it is too late to recover.
Frequently asked questions
What does 75% attendance mean in days?
You must attend at least three out of every four working days or classes. In a 200-day year, that is 150 days attended, so up to 50 can be missed.
How many classes can I miss and still have 75%?
Maximum classes you can miss = total classes − (0.75 × total classes), rounded down. For 60 classes, that is 15.
How many classes must I attend to get back to 75%?
Classes needed = 4 × (0.75 × classes held − classes attended). For example, at 30 of 48, you need 4 × (36 − 30) = 24 more classes in a row.
