Quick answer: a fee receipt should show the institute's name and address, a unique receipt number, date, student name with admission number and class, what the payment is for (instalment and fee heads), the amount in figures and words, payment mode with reference number, any concession or late fee, the balance due and a signature or "computer-generated" note.
Parents keep fee receipts for years. They use them for tax claims, for proof when a school changes management, and for arguments about whether the second instalment was paid. A receipt that answers those questions on its own saves the accounts desk many phone calls.

Numbering receipts properly
- Use a separate series per session, for example RCP/2026-27/00001.
- Never reuse a number, even for cancelled receipts. Mark them Cancelled with a reason.
- If you have branches, add a branch code: RCP/KTH/2026-27/00001.
- Keep online and counter receipts in the same series, so the ledger is complete.
GST on fees: schools vs coaching
| Institute type | GST position (general) | What the receipt needs |
|---|---|---|
| School up to higher secondary | Education to students generally exempt | No GST lines |
| Private coaching or tuition centre | Generally taxable if registered | GSTIN, SAC, taxable value, GST; often issued as a tax invoice |
| Transport or canteen run by a third party | Depends on who supplies it | Check with your adviser |
Receipts for UPI and online payments
Online payments cause most receipt problems because the money arrives in the bank but nobody makes the receipt. Two rules help:
- Every payment link is tied to a student and an instalment. When the parent pays, the receipt is created from that link, not typed later.
- The receipt goes back automatically on WhatsApp or email, with the transaction reference.
In MizUp EOS, fee plans, instalments, concessions and late fees sit on the student record. A payment at the counter or through a payment link creates a numbered receipt, updates the balance and can send the receipt to the parent straight away.
Frequently asked questions
Is GST charged on school fees?
Education services provided by a school to its students up to higher secondary level are generally exempt from GST. Private coaching institutes are usually taxable, so their receipts or invoices need GST details once they are registered.
Can one receipt cover two instalments?
Yes. List both instalments as separate lines with their names and amounts, so the fee ledger shows each as paid.
What should we do if a receipt has an error?
Cancel it with a reason and issue a new receipt. Do not reuse or overwrite the number, because gaps and duplicates are what auditors look for.
Do parents need a receipt for tax purposes?
Parents may claim tuition fees for deductions under the old tax regime, so the receipt should show "tuition fee" separately from transport, exam or other charges.
