Quick answer: for CBSE, multiply CGPA by 9.5: an 8.4 CGPA is 79.8%. Many universities multiply by 10, so 8.4 becomes 84%. VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, which gives 76.5%. There is no single national formula, so use the method printed on your marksheet or published by your university.

What CGPA actually measures
Under grading systems, your marks in each subject are converted to a grade, and each grade carries grade points, usually on a 10-point scale. SGPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points for one semester. CGPA is the credit-weighted average across all semesters so far.
SGPA = Σ (credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits
| Subject | Credits | Grade point | Credits × points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 4 | 9 | 36 |
| Physics | 4 | 8 | 32 |
| Programming | 3 | 10 | 30 |
| English | 2 | 7 | 14 |
| Total | 13 | 112 |
SGPA = 112 ÷ 13 = 8.62. CGPA combines semesters in the same way, weighting each by its credits.
Because grades cover a band of marks (for example 80–89 might all be an A), a CGPA cannot be turned back into your exact marks. Every conversion to percentage is an approximation.

When CBSE used CGPA for Class 10, it published 9.5 as the multiplier to estimate percentage. The board worked it out from the average marks of students who scored in the top grade band across subjects, which came to about 95 for a grade point of 10.
| CBSE CGPA | Percentage |
|---|---|
| 10 | 95% |
| 9.5 | 90.25% |
| 9 | 85.5% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% |
| 8 | 76% |
| 7.5 | 71.25% |
| 7 | 66.5% |
| 6 | 57% |
| 5 | 47.5% |
To reverse it: CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5.
University formulas
Universities set their own rules. The common patterns are:
| Method | CGPA → % | Example for 8.2 |
|---|---|---|
| Multiply by 10 | CGPA × 10 | 82% |
| VTU | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 74.5% |
| CBSE-style | CGPA × 9.5 | 77.9% |
| 4-point scale | CGPA ÷ 4 × 100 | n/a for a 10-point CGPA |
Some universities use other constants or a lookup table, and a few change the method between batches or regulations. Many print the conversion formula on the back of the grade card. When in doubt, check the academic regulations on the university website or ask the examination section for a conversion certificate.
4-point scales and study abroad
Universities in the United States and some other countries report GPA on a 4-point scale. Converting an Indian 10-point CGPA to a 4-point GPA is not a simple division: most admissions offices and credential evaluation services apply their own methods based on your transcript. Report your CGPA with its scale (for example 8.2/10) and let the institution or evaluator convert it, unless they ask you to calculate it.
Why not just multiply by 10?
Multiplying by 10 is simple and many universities use it, but it tends to overstate percentages at the lower end of the scale, because grade bands near the pass mark are wide. Formulas such as VTU's subtract a constant to correct for this. CBSE's 9.5 multiplier corrects in the other direction, reflecting that even a perfect grade point stood for an average of about 95 marks. Neither is right or wrong: each is calibrated to its own grading scheme, which is exactly why you should use the formula that matches your marksheet.
Reporting grades on forms
Job portals, government recruitment forms, scholarships and entrance exams often ask for a percentage:
- Look for instructions on the form. Some specify a formula, such as multiply by 9.5 or by 10.
- Otherwise use your university's formula and keep proof, such as the grade card or regulations.
- Be consistent. Use the same conversion on your CV, application and interview documents.
- State the scale wherever there is space: "CGPA 8.2/10 (equivalent 82%, university formula)".
Common mistakes
- Using CBSE's 9.5 for a university degree whose regulations say multiply by 10
- Converting SGPA of the last semester when the form asks for aggregate CGPA
- Rounding up aggressively (7.46 to 7.5) before converting
- Forgetting that some universities count only the final two years for the degree result
Grades, grade points and marks: a worked table
Here is a typical 10-point scheme used by many schools and universities. Your institution's bands may differ.
| Marks | Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| 91–100 | A1 / O | 10 |
| 81–90 | A2 / A+ | 9 |
| 71–80 | B1 / A | 8 |
| 61–70 | B2 / B+ | 7 |
| 51–60 | C1 / B | 6 |
| 41–50 | C2 / C | 5 |
| 33–40 | D / P | 4 |
A student scoring 82 and another scoring 90 both get 9 grade points, which is why two students with the same CGPA can have different actual marks, and why any percentage worked out from CGPA is an estimate.
Does a higher conversion help you?
Not really. Employers and admissions committees compare candidates from the same university using the same method, and many ask for your CGPA with its scale anyway. What helps is consistency and being able to show the official formula if asked. Choosing a more generous formula than your university uses can look like misrepresentation.
Converting SGPA to percentage
When a form asks for the percentage of a particular semester, apply the same formula to that semester's SGPA. When it asks for the aggregate, use the CGPA. Some universities calculate the final percentage from marks rather than grades and print it on the final transcript; if yours does, use that figure instead of converting.
Quick answers for common CGPAs
| CGPA | × 9.5 (CBSE) | × 10 | VTU |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.2 | 87.4% | 92% | 84.5% |
| 8.8 | 83.6% | 88% | 80.5% |
| 7.8 | 74.1% | 78% | 70.5% |
| 6.5 | 61.75% | 65% | 57.5% |
For schools and colleges
Calculating grades, SGPA and CGPA by hand takes days each term and invites errors that are painful to fix after results are published. A school system that takes marks once and applies your grading scheme, credits and conversion formula automatically produces consistent report cards and transcripts.
MizUp EOS handles exams, grading, report cards, attendance, fees and certificates such as the transfer certificate, and shares results with parents on the same day. For coaching institutes and schools evaluating software, the school fee management guide is a good place to start.
